Around every magnet there is a magnetic field — invisible, but real. Scatter iron filings near a magnet and each tiny sliver becomes its own little compass, turning to point along the field. The pattern you see is the shape of the field reaching out into space.
These needles do the same thing. Near a pole the field is strong, so they snap around fast; far away it is weak, so they turn slowly. That is why a flip travels outward like a wave.
Even with no magnet nearby, the needles still point — because Earth itself is a giant magnet. That is how every compass on the planet finds north.
