The Drake equation multiplies a chain of factors — how fast stars form, how many grow life, how many grow minds — down to one number: how many civilizations are broadcasting in the galaxy right now. Every factor but the last is a fraction. The last is L, the lifetime of a civilization, and it swings the answer more than all the rest.
Here each civilization blinks on, lives for L, and dies. The number alive at any instant is roughly birth rate x L. Spawn millions across cosmic time, but give each only a few millennia, and almost none are ever alive together — the galaxy is empty even as it teems.
A signal races outward at light speed. For two civilizations to hear each other they must be alive at the same time and close enough that light can cross the gap before one dies. Short lives make that nearly impossible; long lives make it easy.
That gap between "millions have existed" and "the sky is silent" is Fermi's paradox. Tune the factors and feel where the silence comes from.
