When visuals don’t help: novices, experts, and the coherence principle

It would be easy to read the research on visuals and narration as “add pictures, always.” That’s not what it says. The same studies that establish the multimedia effect also map its limits — and those limits are where good lesson design actually lives.

Relevance beats decoration: the coherence principle

Adding visuals only helps when the visuals carry the idea. The coherence principle shows that interesting-but-irrelevant detail — decorative stock images, background music, a fun fact in the margin — measurably reduces learning. Extraneous material competes for the same limited capacity as the content, and the learner pays for it in comprehension. A relevant diagram is a teaching tool; a pretty picture next to the text is a tax.

The expertise reversal effect

Here’s the subtler one. The benefits of rich multimedia support are strongest for novices — learners who don’t yet have the mental models to fill gaps on their own. For experts, the same support can backfire. Once you already hold the structure in your head, extra explanation and guiding visuals become redundant, and processing them gets in the way. Support that scaffolds a beginner can slow down an expert. This is the expertise reversal effect, and it means there is no single “best” version of a lesson — only a best version for a given learner.

Why we build one subject at several levels

A novice and an expert don’t need the same lesson delivered faster or slower; they need lessons designed around different amounts of prior knowledge, with visuals matched to where they are. Designing honestly

  • Every visual must earn its place by carrying part of the explanation — no decoration for its own sake.
  • Match the support to the learner: more scaffolding for novices, less for the advanced.
  • Keep the screen clean: relevant image, narrated words, nothing fighting for the same channel.

The multimedia effect is one of the most robust findings in learning science. Using it well means respecting its boundaries as much as its promise.
