Welcome to class one. Most history books start with the pyramids or the ancient Greeks. Today we are going to start way, way before that — three hundred thousand years before that. Because by the time anyone built a pyramid, our species had already been around for hundreds of thousands of years. We had already walked out of Africa, spread across every continent except Antarctica, painted in caves, and figured out fire. So the real beginning of the human story is not in a city. It is on the African savanna. And every single human alive today shares one ancient mother who lived there. Let us go meet her family.

1. How did one species end up everywhere on Earth?

No other large mammal lives on every continent. Just us.

Polar bears live in the Arctic. Lions live in Africa. Kangaroos live in Australia. But humans? Humans live everywhere — frozen tundra, baking deserts, mountain peaks, jungle floors. How did one species spread so far?

  • Polar bears: Arctic only.
  • Lions: Africa and one corner of India.
  • Kangaroos: Australia and a few nearby islands.
  • Humans: every continent except Antarctica — and we built bases there.

2. We are Homo sapiens — the smart human.

There used to be at least seven species of human. Only ours is left.

Our species is called Homo sapiens — Latin for 'wise human' or 'thinking human'. We first appear in the fossil record about 300,000 years ago, in Africa. For most of our history, we were not the only humans on Earth.

  • 300,000 years ago: first Homo sapiens fossils, in what is now Morocco.
  • We shared the planet with at least 6 other human species — Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo erectus, and others.
  • 40,000 years ago: the last other human species disappeared. Just us left.

3. The human family tree, in five eras.

We share an ancestor with chimpanzees only 6 million years ago. That is recent.

Six million years sounds like a lot, but in evolutionary time, it is not. Sharks have existed for 400 million years. Dinosaurs were around for 165 million. The whole human family — every Homo species — fits in the last 6 million years.

  • 6 million years ago: split from common ancestor with chimps.
  • 4 million years ago: walking upright (Australopithecus).
  • 2.5 million years ago: first stone tools.
  • 300,000 years ago: Homo sapiens appears.
  • 12,000 years ago: agriculture begins.

4. Three big migrations took us across the world.

Humans walked from Africa to Australia. The whole way.

Modern humans did not stay in Africa. Starting around 70,000 years ago, small groups walked out and never stopped walking. Three major migrations spread us across the planet.

  • ~70,000 years ago: first wave leaves Africa, heads east along the Indian Ocean.
  • ~50,000 years ago: humans reach Australia (had to cross open ocean).
  • ~45,000 years ago: humans reach Europe.
  • ~15,000 years ago: humans cross from Siberia to North America.
  • ~1,000 years ago: humans reach the last island — New Zealand.

5. The oldest art ever found.

A 45,000-year-old painting of a pig in Indonesia is older than every cave painting in Europe.

In twenty seventeen, scientists exploring a remote cave on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia found something remarkable. On the cave wall was a life-sized painting of a warty pig — that is a real animal that lives in Indonesia — drawn in red ochre. They dated the painting using a technique called uranium-series dating, which can measure how old certain mineral deposits on top of paint are. The result: at least forty five thousand five hundred years old. That is the oldest known representational art on Earth. Older than any European cave painting. Older than the pyramids of Egypt by forty thousand years. Whoever painted that pig was a Homo sapiens with a brain just like yours. They had imagination, the ability to plan, the desire to make a record of what they saw. The capacity to create art is at least forty-five thousand years old. Probably much older — we just have not found the older paintings yet.

6. Three things that made Homo sapiens unstoppable.

We were not the strongest, fastest, or biggest. So how did we win?

Other human species were physically stronger. Neanderthals could probably wrestle a Homo sapiens to the ground. So why are we still here and they are not? Three advantages.

  • Language — we could share complex ideas, plans, and stories.
  • Cooperation in big groups — beyond family, with strangers.
  • Behavioral flexibility — we changed strategies fast when conditions changed.

7. Your DNA contains a record of where your ancestors went.

Most non-Africans alive today have a tiny bit of Neanderthal DNA. We met them, and we mixed.

Here is one of the wildest things modern science discovered. When Homo sapiens walked out of Africa and met Neanderthals in Europe, and Denisovans in Asia, they did not just live near each other. They had children together. We know this because we can read DNA today, and we have sequenced Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA from old bones. If you have ancestors from Europe, you probably have about one point eight percent Neanderthal DNA. If you have ancestors from East Asia, around one point nine percent Neanderthal plus a tiny bit of Denisovan. Some people in Papua New Guinea have up to five percent Denisovan DNA. People with mostly sub-Saharan African ancestry usually have very little Neanderthal DNA, because the Neanderthals lived outside Africa — you only met them if your ancestors left. So the other human species are not entirely gone. They are inside us. They are part of who we are.

8. Big brains made us smart. They almost killed us.

Human babies are born helpless because their heads are barely small enough to fit through the birth canal.

Our giant brains are our superpower. They are also expensive. They use 20% of our energy, take decades to develop, and almost kill us being born. Other apes do not have these problems.

  • Brain uses 20% of body energy despite being 2% of body weight.
  • Human babies born ~9 months earlier than other apes (proportionally) — to fit the head.
  • Human babies are helpless for years — most mammal babies walk in days.
  • Childbirth dangerous: human moms historically died at high rates.

9. Homo sapiens vs Neanderthals — a closer look.

Neanderthals had bigger brains than us. Brain size is not everything.

If brain size were the only thing that mattered, Neanderthals would be running the world. Their brains were on average slightly larger than ours. So what was different?

  • Brain size: Neanderthals slightly bigger than Homo sapiens.
  • Body: Neanderthals shorter, stockier, more muscle, more cold-adapted.
  • Tools: similar quality, but Homo sapiens innovated faster.
  • Social groups: Homo sapiens lived in larger groups, traded over longer distances.
  • Symbolism: Homo sapiens art, beads, jewelry far more abundant.

10. Three myths about human origins that need to die.

Race is not a biological category. Genetically, two people from the same village can be more different than people from different continents.

Pop history gets a lot wrong about human origins. These three myths show up over and over and they are not just inaccurate — they have caused real harm.

  • "Humans evolved from monkeys." False. We share an ancestor with monkeys, but we did not come from any living species.
  • "Race is biological." False. Genetic variation within any group is huge; differences between groups are small.
  • "Some humans are more advanced than others." Wrong. Every human alive is the same species, with similar capabilities.

11. Three sciences that pieced together our origin story.

A skull, a tool, and a strand of DNA — three different windows into the past.

How do we know any of this? People did not write things down for the first 290,000 years of our species. So how did we figure out the story? Three fields, working together.

  • Paleontology — study of fossils. Skulls, bones, tools. Tells us what was where, when.
  • Archaeology — study of artifacts and sites. Tells us how people lived day to day.
  • Genetics — study of DNA. Tells us who is related to whom, and when populations split.
