Picture the thing reading these words. Not your eyes — the thing behind them. About three pounds of soft, wrinkled tissue with the texture of firm jelly, tucked inside your skull. It doesn't move, it doesn't look like much, and yet it is doing something genuinely staggering. Every joke that ever made you laugh, every person you've loved, every fear that's kept you up at night — all of it happened in here, as patterns of electricity and chemistry between cells. That's the strange, almost unbelievable fact at the heart of neuroscience. There is no separate 'you' floating above the brain, pulling levers. The activity is the you. Over this course we'll take that apart gently — attention, memory, emotion, stress, sleep, habit — and rebuild a picture of your own mind that's accurate instead of mystical. So let's start the tour where it belongs: with the organ itself, and the oldest question we have about it. How does a lump of tissue become a person?
